The Healthy Skin Checklist: 6 Steps to a Healthy, Youthful Glow

Your skin essentially acts as your first line of defence, doing battle with the elements and environmental pollutants on a day-to-day basis.

Here’s our 6 step checklist to show your skin some love and help you radiate confidence from the inside out.

AM cleanse & moisturise

Your morning skincare regime is a chance to nourish your skin from the get-go and start the day feeling fresh. While your routine should be personalised to your individual needs, it’s generally recommended you start with some sort of cleanser or face wash to wash away sweat and oils that buildup as you sleep. Follow this up with a moisturiser to hydrate and lock in essential moisture, keeping your skin healthy and glowing.

Protect against sun damage

After moisturising, it's time to apply an SPF to protect against sun damage and premature ageing (which can even occur in Winter months, through clouds and windows). To ensure the best coverage, choose a targeted facial sunscreen product as opposed to a moisturiser or makeup that contains SPF.

Stay hydrated

While there is not sufficient data to show that drinking more water will help to hydrate your skin, it's generally agreed that avoiding dehydration is important for overall well-being (and to support skin elasticity [*]). You could also replace some beverages with green tea - rich in antioxidants and polyphenols that may help protect against free radical damage.

Nourish from the inside

Diet can be a significant contributing factor when it comes to skin health. Check out our article on the best foods for healthy skin, and consider taking supplements to support your dietary efforts. Collagen has been linked with improved skin elasticity [*] and a decrease in wrinkle depth [*].

Wind down PM routine

Your evening routine is a good chance to wind down and care for your skin after a long day. As with the AM routine, begin with a cleanser to wash off environmental pollutants that can damage cells. You can then opt to enhance your skin with actives that can work overnight. Retinol is a popular anti-ageing compound, and niacinamide is a great all-rounder that helps regulate oil production and brightens skin. Follow this up with a moisturiser that will soak in overnight.

Get your beauty sleep

Sleep is where the body undergoes repair processes and has a chance to absorb the goodness from your evening routine. Studies show that sleep plays a role in restoring immune function, which can impact collagen production [*]. Another reason to make more time for good quality shut-eye!
